& Goals:

Georgia Performance Standards (GPS – 8th grade)
M8N1. Students will understand different representations of numbers including square roots, exponents and scientific notation, (i) simplify expressions containing integer exponents, (j) express and use numbers in scientific notation.

National Council for Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM – grades 6 – 8)
Develop an understanding of large numbers and recognize and appropriately use exponential, scientific and calculator notation

Students will:

  • Read/listen to One Grain of Rice: A Mathematical Folktale by Demi.
  • Understand the relationship between a base number and an exponent.
  • Determine exponential growth using base number 2, with exponents from 1 to 30.
